Jakarta, May 24, 2016:The Minister of Environment and Forestry of RI, Dr. SitiNurbaya Bakar is in Nairobi, Kenya, through May 27, 2016, to attend the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA-2). She will convey Indonesia’s interest, one of which contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The second session of the UNEA is taking place at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi under the overarching theme, “Delivering on the Environmental Dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” The Assembly, which represents the world’s highest level of decision-making bodies on the environment will culminate in resolutions and a global call to action to address the critical challenges facing the world today.
Indonesia’s Ambassador to Kenya,SoehardjonoSastromihardjo, as chair of the Indonesian Delegationsaid at the opening of UNEA-2 that,“Indonesia considers the United Nations Environment Assembly an important forum to address critical global environmental issues. Indonesia is focusing on the issues of chemicals, wastes, ocean plastic wastes and microplastics, besides sustainable management of coral reefs, the impacts of climate change, sustainable consumption and production, the illegal trade of wildlife, and UNEP’s 2018 – 2021 mid-term strategy document. Indonesia is now moving forward after adopting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals last year.”
Soehardjono added, “We are certain efficacy in handling environmental issues are dependent on several important factors, namelystrong commitment from political leaders, multistakeholder collaboration and partnership, good governance, approaches to issues through science-based policy promotion,and through appropriate technology and application of human resources. We have to ensure that all elements and the SustainableDevlopment Goals themselve are our guidelines in our collective action,” he said.
“We hope that this high level segment of the UNEA-2 will become concrete measures and can be realized to fulfil our commitments to the 2030 SDGs particularly in their environmental dimensions,” Soehardjono added.
